New Orleans belongs to me.
You don’t know my name, but I control everything you see—and all the things you don’t.
My reach knows no bounds, and my demands are always met.
I didn’t need to loan money to a failing family distillery, but it amuses me to have them in my debt.
To have her in my debt.
She doesn’t know she caught my attention.
She should’ve been more careful.
I’m going to own her. Consume her. Maybe even keep her.
It’s time to collect what I’m owed.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

The moment readers meet Lachlan Mount they’ll be left conflicted.  He’s an enigma who’s not easily seen as a hero as he cold, controlling, and a bit cruel. Despite that you can’t help being drawn to him and desperate to know more about his mysterious past.  He’s not at the forefront of this series starter, but his commanding reputation permeates the entire story and he’s never far from our thoughts.  He exudes power and eroticism and his sensual web captured me in a haze that had me frantically turning the pages.

Keira Kilgore, the feisty heroine who tells it like it is, is equally conflicted when it comes to the man who controls the future of her family’s distillery.  Discovering that her dead husband’s betrayals have left her in debt to a man feared throughout New Orleans changes her life irrevocably in a battle that has her discovering things about herself as she tries to save her family’s legacy.  Keira’s always been the good daughter, dedicated to her family’s distillery and focused on being a successful businesswoman.  She never did the unexpected, never gave into temptation.  She’s a tough woman, unafraid to stand up for herself, and doesn’t like relying on others.  The one time she threw caution to the wind she ended up married to a man whose life was a complete lie and who betrayed her in oh so many ways.  Being beholden to a man like Mount is frustrating on many levels and it makes for a combustible connection from the very start.  He pushes every one of her buttons, has her questioning everything about her sexuality, and leaves her hating him but wanting him too.  Through it all Keira’s a likable heroine with a strong backbone whose verbal sparring makes for an erotically-charged battle of the sexes.  It’s a war where winning isn’t easily defined but it’s entertaining watching each of them try to control the other.

Lachlan Mount’s a man of mystery who knows everyone’s secrets and is willing to use those secrets to get what he wants.  He easily manipulates through fear and by using your own desires against you.  He treats people as puppets in dramas he creates for shear entertainment.  It’s given him a much-deserved reputation of being a cold-hearted bastard whose guilty of every crime he’s accused of.  That reputation fuels the connection between him and Keira and makes for a verbal war of words that felt more like foreplay.  His demands are erotically-charged and led to scorching scenes that left Keira confused and readers blushing.  He’s not a romantic man, his words are sometimes crude and his actions cold, but he’s a man you won’t forget.  Those rare moments of care and concern he shows towards Keira intrigue me though and have me holding out hope that she’ll bring out a softer side to him.  As this series progresses I look forward to learning more about the man behind the mystique and to see who the victor will be as he and Keira continue to spar.

This is a gritty read with larger than life characters.  Keira’s a heroine you can’t help but root for as she gives as good as she gets.  In her battle with Mount it’s clear she’ll do what’s necessary to save her family’s legacy, but at the same time she’ll do what she must to save herself and not get lost in the sensual haze surrounding him.  Mount’s not an easy man to like but he’s a man who takes over every scene he’s in.  His moods are mercurial which kept me on edge trying to guess what he’d do or say next.  Together they make for an uncomparable couple whose scenes are crackling and whose banter was teeming with sexual tension.  Their sexy interludes weren’t exactly romantic but they definitely left me parched and rooting for Keira to finally take control. Along with this bold main couple there were a few secondary characters that stood out.  Keira’s friend Magnolia intrigued me greatly as she‘s a strong-willed woman, outspoken and a strong support for Keira.  She’s an escort/madam who knows plenty of secrets of her own and has always tried to push Keira to embrace the longings she’s long kept hidden.  Mount’s driver Scar also grabbed my attention for his quiet yet commanding presence.  He does Mount’s bidding but it’s clear he’s a man not to be messed with.  This first installment in the Mount Trilogy laid some compelling groundwork as a few secrets were revealed and moments of foreboding were unleashed.  Amidst all the sensual haze was a bit of suspense as it’s clear that Lachlan Mount’s not the only danger to Keira.  Readers who dislike cliffhangers will be frustrated by being left hanging but will forgive Ms. March as it’s one heckuva cliffhanger she crafted.  Though I saw it coming it still has me excited for the next installment and to see where the opening of this can of worms takes us!

My rating for this is an A.
